While not commonly practiced due to Apple's proprietary monitor input design, an Apple monitor can be connected to a PC. Connecting an Apple monitor to one of your business PCs first requires an understanding of the different types of monitor connections that Macs and PCs use. The two most common PC monitor connection types are VGA and DVI, while Mac monitors commonly use the DisplayPort or Thunderbolt connector types.

You can make all of your displays mirror each other, or extend your workspace with different apps and windows on each display. If you use an external display with your Mac notebook, you can also use closed-display mode. The 27-inch iMac has a bi-directional Mini DisplayPort or a Thunderbolt port (depending on the model) that can be used to drive a second monitor. The same Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port can be used as a video input that allows your iMac to serve as a monitor for another Mac.

Shut down your computer and monitor, then disconnect your current monitor if necessary.

Locate the monitor cable port on the back of your PC and the Mac monitor. To identify the connector types, examine the shape of the connector, count the number of pins or holes and take note of the configuration of the pins or holes. The Mac Thunderbolt connector looks identical to the mini-DisplayPort connector, but is differentiated by a thunderbolt-shaped icon near the port.

Insert the Mac connector cable into its corresponding port on the monitor. If the opposite end of your Mac connector cable has pins, you will need a female Mac to PC converter, while if it has holes, you will need a male Mac to PC converter.

Connect the PC connector cable to your computer's monitor port and examine the opposite end of your PC connector cable. If the cable has pins, you will need a Mac to PC converter with a female PC side, while if it has holes, your converter must have pins on the PC side.

Connect the PC cable to the converter, then connect the Mac cable. Tighten all connections if necessary, then power on your monitor and computer.

If your iMac doesn't switch to Target Display Mode when you press Command-F2, check these things:
Exit Target Display Mode
To leave Target Display Mode, press Command-F2 on the iMac keyboard again. Your iMac also exits Target Display Mode if you disconnect the cable that connects the two computers, or if you shut down or sleep either computer.
If the connected Mac goes into sleep mode, the iMac screen turns off until you wake the other computer, or until you take your iMac out of Target Display Mode.
Display options
You can control the brightness of your iMac display while it's in Target Display Mode from a connected Mac. Use the Displays pane of System Preferences on the connected Mac, or use the brightness keys on the keyboard of the connected Mac.
To hear audio from a connected Mac using the built-in speakers of your iMac, select the iMac from the Sound pane of System Preferences. You can also use the sound and media keys on the keyboard of the connected Mac to adjust volume and control playback of iTunes and other media.
Connect more than one display
You can use multiple iMac computers as displays as long as each iMac is directly connected to a Thunderbolt port on your computer using a ThunderBolt cable. Each iMac you connect as a display counts towards the maximum number of simultaneously connected displays that your Mac supports.
Avoid trying to connect (chain) iMac computers that are in Target Display Mode to each other. Each iMac in Target Display Mode should be connected directly to a Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt port directly on the Mac where you want to use it as a display.
Use apps on your iMacUse Mac Monitor With Pc
Any apps that are open on your iMac remain open and active while your iMac is in Target Display Mode. For example, if you begin playing music in iTunes on your iMac and then activate Target Display Mode, iTunes doesn't pause on your iMac.
If you've set your iMac to automatically log out, apps are paused or closed when this happens but your iMac remains in Target Display Mode.
Use Imac As Monitor For PcConnect devices to your Mac
A Mac that's connected to an iMac in Target Display Mode can't use the iMac computer's built-in camera, its USB, ThunderBolt, or FireWire ports, or devices connected to those ports. To use external devices with your Mac, connect these devices directly to the Mac that you want to use them with.
